Let’s Learn Hockey Program, will be held at the Ridley College Arena
in St. Catharines on Saturday, April 23, 2011

John Archibald, President, Minor Hockey Foundation Ontario(MHF), is pleased to announce that the Foundation’s premier event, the Let’s Learn Hockey Program, will be held at the Ridley College Arena in St. Catharines on Saturday, April 23, 2011.

Local group KidzCanHelp.ca contacted both the MHF and the Garden City Minor Hockey Association about hosting the event on April 23rd, 2011 and the response has been outstanding according to John Archibald.

The program each year provides approximately thirty-six (36) children, age’s seven (7) to eleven (11), who have been nominated by the regional Children’s Aid Society Unit and adjacent C.A.S. Units as well as Big Brothers and Sisters and the local minor hockey associations with an opportunity to participate.

“When I found out about the event I went to work quickly to contact the MHF about bringing it to Niagara. After getting all the details about the program I then contacted Garden City Minor Hockey Association who agreed to sponsor the ice time,” said Chase, Director of Community Relations for KidzCanHelp.ca

The Lets Learn Hockey Program provides a one day hockey orientation experience for each child, a complete set of hockey equipment, skates to helmet, and sponsors the child in the house league hockey program of his or her choice by subsidizing the registration fees for the current season.

“One of the goals of KidzCanHelp.ca is putting kids in touch with programs that help provide funds to play hockey and the Let’s Learn Hockey Program goes beyond that by also providing a complete set of hockey equipment as well,” says Chase. “Over the next few years as the kids grow KidzCanHelp.ca is a resource to get new equipment for them to continue to play.”

The Lets Learn Hockey Program is now going into its 9th year and has been very favourably accepted by the minor hockey associations of southern and northern Ontario.

“There will be several local sponsorship opportunities for this event and I will be working hard with local businesses to make this day a great experience these kids will remember for a lifetime,” says Chase.

KidzCanHelp.ca is proud to announce former Toronto Maple Leaf Goaltender Peter Ing as our Honorary Chair for the Kick Off of our Winter 2010 Hockey Equipment Drive

Picture
“Ethan, Nick and KidzCanHelp.ca have taken the initiative to make a difference in other kids’ lives by providing them with a chance to play hockey.  This is a wonderful, grass-roots program, which I am happy to support, in the hope of helping others experience the opportunity I was blessed to have,” says Peter Ing.

At a recent event held by St. Catharines CYO Hockey for the “Just Try it” program which KidzCanHelp.ca supports, they were able to meet Peter after watching him on the ice helping the kids and seeing the passion he still has for the game.

“Seeing Peter’s willingness to help kids who in some cases had never skated before experience the thrill of playing hockey, I saw an opportunity for him to work with us and to help even more kids,” says Chase, Director of Community Relations for KidzCanHelp.ca.

KidzCanHelp is striving to reach some of the following goals for their “Winter 2010 Equipment Drive” which will kick off in November:
-          100 pairs of skates for kids across Niagara
-          Enough equipment to suit up 50 children
-          Raise funds to subsidize 12 kids for hockey programs

“Based on the community support the past year from hockey parents and local businesses, I am confident we can exceed our goals and help even more kids,” says Chase.

KidzCanHelp.ca recognizes the benefits the game of hockey provides kids from all walks of life in teaching life skills, personal discipline and the power of working together as a team. These benefits are also recognized by Peter Ing.

“The experience of playing hockey helped shape me as an individual and provided opportunity in my life, and I see that my own children’s lives are enriched because of hockey.  It saddens me that many children miss out on participating in this great game due to the cost of equipment and ice time,” says Ing.

In the next few weeks KidzCanHelp.ca will also be announcing their official “Kick Off” event for their “Winter 2010 Hockey Equipment Drive” which will be hosted at the Hockey Factory on Welland Ave in St. Catharines. If you are interested in donating new and gently used equipment or becoming a sponsor please contact Chase at 905-228-1151 or email info@kidzcanhelp.ca.

About KidzCanHelp.ca
Launched in 2009 KidzCanHelp.ca has quickly evolved from the original idea to collect used equipment for children in Bosnia to now helping local kids across the Niagara Region. The idea has become a great cause supported by our family, friends, local hockey associations and the community.

Ethan Chase and Nick Kosturek, the two nine-year-old founders were inspired to take up the challenge of spreading their love of hockey from a Hockey Night in Canada segment they watched. During the segment Don Cherry and Ron MacLean invited a young man from Bosnia to come on camera and share his story of the struggle to play and get hockey equipment in his home country. To date we have provided over a cube van full of equipment for Bosnia and Serbia, helped over 40 local kids by outfitting them with hockey equipment and provided six kids with funds towards local hockey programs.

About our Honorary Chair Peter Ing
Peter was drafted 48th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs.  In his 1990/91 rookie season, Ing played 56 games for the Maple Leafs and was the Molson Cup winner.  Peter also played for the Edmonton Oilers and Detroit Red Wings.

Post hockey, Peter transitioned into the hospitality and entertainment business, working with MGM/Mirage Resorts in Las Vegas and Niagara Casinos.  After 12 years as a casino executive, Peter joined Fan-tastic Sports™ with partner Bryce Salvador (New Jersey Devils).  Peter now runs his own company named INGcorporated™ and is available for consulting, marketing, event facilitation, speaking engagements, and appearances.

INGcorporated.com and Fan-tasticSports.com sell a line of portable hockey-specific training products (for home and coaching) and training facility products, and facilitate large-scale hockey interactive events with their own proprietary equipment and technology.

Hockey players assist Bosnian counterparts - from the St.Catharines Standard

Picture
A pair of St. Catharines boys are trying their best to help young Bosnians achieve their hockey dreams.

Eight-year-olds Ethan Chase and Nick Kosturek have worked since November to collect donations of hockey equipment to send to Bosnia and Herzegovina. The boys' efforts have resulted in nearly two cube vans full of gently used hockey equipment for the country's young hockey players who must rely on such donations to play the sport they love.

"It's for kids in Bosnia who want to play hockey but can't," said Chase of his and Kosturek's efforts.

With the help of their parents, the boys created a web-site called Kidz Can Help and sought out media attention for their campaign.

They set up drop-off locations for hockey equipment, held donation drives at Niagara IceDogs and St. Catharines Falcons games and formed partnerships from sponsors like the NHLPA.

"We're looking for skates, gloves, sticks, helmets, stuff like that," Kosturek said.

The boys, both defencemen for the Novice A St. Catharines Warriors, were inspired to act following an appearance by Bosnian hockey player Mici Hodzic on Hockey Night in Canada last November.

They were surprised to hear eighteen-year-old Hodzic, flanked by Ron MacLean and Don Cherry, talk about the scarcity of hockey equipment in his homeland. Currently, there are an estimated 250 Bosnian players playing organized hockey in the country of just over 4,500,000 people.

"We thought kids in Bosnia could go to the store and buy hockey equipment," Chase said.

Alan Beech of the Bosnian Sports Foundation says his group will send the donated equipment to Bosnia -- around 12-14 boxes full -- by next month with plans to ship more.

"It's pretty amazing that boys from St. Catharines are collecting equipment for boys from Bosnia," said Beech, the organization's Canadian adviser.

Beech, who has visited Bosnia and Herzegovina regularly since 2007, says hockey has helped young Bosnians transcend their often miserable circumstances.

"The government has gone bankrupt and there isn't a boy out there who hasn't lost family members to the war," he said. "In the face of moral difficulties, these kids are learning through playing hockey how to become the country's future leaders."

In addition to helping out Bosnian hockey players, Chase and Kosturek were able to donate four complete sets of equipment to the St. Catharines CYO Minor Hockey League's Try It Once program.

The program, which took place at the end of February, gave 16 kids between the ages of seven and 14, who had never played hockey before to play for free in equipment they could keep. A second Just Try It will take place in August, and Chase and Kosturek recently presented a cheque for $300 to program organizers Renee Rochefort-Smith and Connie Mack.

Rochefort-Smith said the donation -- which was collected through the sale of NHLPA merchandise and Hockey Hall of Fame passes -- will help pay for the costs for six kids to take part in the program.

Jason Chase, father of Ethan, said the fundraising by the two boys has made them eager to continue helping less-fortunate kids and made them aware of the high cost required to play their favourite sport.

"Bosnia was an inspiration for them to help kids in Niagara," he said.

Visit www.kidzcanhelp.ca for more information on how to donate new or gently-used hockey equipment.

Thursday January 28th, 2010 -KidzCanHelp.ca partners with Blade Pro Products Inc,
the manufacturer of the next generation of hockey stick tapes

Picture
“We love the game of hockey and want to support those who have the same drive to share this desire with as many people as possible,” said Richard Findlay, President of Blade Pro Products Inc., a small business based out of Vancouver, BC which manufactures BladeTape – a revolutionary cloth tape alternative. “When contacted by KidzCanHelp.ca we were impressed by the initiative they were taking and wanted to help. These kids are doing a great thing and we are proud to be a part of it.”

BladeTape has rapidly become the preferred alternative taping system for players of all ages and skill levels, including many elite players in the NHL and European leagues. One of the best attributes of BladeTape is its amenability to printing with high resolution, robust images and logos. This allowed the company to secure licensing agreements with the NHL, Hockey Canada and the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Organizing Committee (VANOC). Blade Pro also offers ‘Custom BladeTape’ where hockey players get to create their own customized BladeTape.

Findlay and his company Blade Pro Products Inc. are providing KidzCanHelp.ca with 200 Custom BladeTape to help in their campaign to provide new & used hockey equipment to children in Canada and Bosnia. Funds raised will also go towards paying the enrollment fees for children to register to play hockey in the fall of 2010.

“It is great that companies like Blade Pro Products Inc. exist and give back. At KidzCanHelp.ca we appreciate their efforts in helping my son an his friend share their love of hockey in Canada and as far away as Bosnia’ says Chase, one of the fathers of the two eight year old boys that started up KidzCanhelp.ca in late November 2009. “Two kids started out with a small idea that has grown larger then we could have ever expected. It shows that great things can start even in the youngest of people.”

On top of donating the 200 custom designed BladeTape, Blade Pro Products Inc is also providing enough product for the two boys entire St. Catharines Warriors Novice A team.

“We cannot wait for the team to get the additional gift from Richard and Blade Pro in time for our association tournament,” said Chase. “BladeTape was on all of the players’ wish lists this past holiday season and they will be thrilled.”
